Johnstone First for Free Public Wi-Fi

Johnstone first for free public Wi-FiBoston Networks has delivered the first free Public Wi-Fi service to Johnstone Town Centre and the surrounding area. The high-speed Wi-Fi service is now also live in a number of public buildings across Johnstone, including the town hall and community library.

The initiative is part of a £1 million project to bring free public Wi-Fi to towns and public buildings across the Renfrewshire Council area to address a number of key strategic priorities, including tackling poverty, and improving digital inclusion and participation.

Boston Networks was awarded the £6 million-pound Framework Agreement to deliver Public Wi-Fi connectivity for Renfrewshire Council and other leading public-sector organisations last year.

Since award, Boston Networks has worked closely with Renfrewshire Council to design and deliver a leading-edge, secure and fully managed wireless solution. The ubiquitous, high performing and scalable Public Wi-Fi is now being realised as users across Renfrewshire logon to enjoy the seamless, user friendly experience.

Renfrewshire Council leader, Councillor Iain Nicolson said:
“Back in November, we made a commitment to the people of Johnstone that they would be the first community in Renfrewshire to get outdoor public Wi-Fi in their town centre. I’m delighted that we have delivered on this commitment and look forward to seeing Johnstone residents and visitors enjoying the benefits that free public Wi-Fi offers.

“Giving all members of the community equal access to the internet via free public Wi-Fi is an excellent way to tackle the problem of digital exclusion which can affect low income earners, older adults and people with disabilities. It also provides everyone with the same level of access to important information such as health advice and online education, as well as the ability to communicate instantly with others”.

“Ultimately, the installation of free public Wi-Fi in the town centre will help Johnstone to become a better-connected society.”

Chief Executive of Boston Networks Scott McEwan commented:
“We’re delighted to deliver the first public Wi-Fi service to Johnstone town centre. Using the very latest wireless technology, our experienced team worked with Renfrewshire Council to enhance the user experience by offering seamless connectivity into even the most difficult to reach areas – so that visitors and residents can now benefit from fast and free internet access across the town centre and surrounding area.”

Paisley and Renfrew will be next to receive free public Wi-Fi, which will go live in Spring 2018.
