Background
As part of the new South Glasgow Hospital campus, the new £90 million laboratory is one of the most modern facilities in the UK, enabling groundbreaking research and pioneering treatments to be developed.
The new laboratory accommodates blood sciences, pathology, genetics, and microbiology, post-mortem and mortuary services and is developing lifesaving treatments and technologies to benefit patient diagnosis across Scotland.

Business Challenge
Covering 25,000 square meters, the laboratory building is more than five storeys high and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
In the planning stages NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GG&C) quickly identified that the new laboratory, and indeed the New South Glasgow Hospital campus, required a future proof, secure and highly resilient and security infrastructure.

The new building demanded a robust cabling solution to facilitate a wealth of different technologies and an integrated security system to protect staff and members of the public throughout the building and around the perimeter.

Solution
Boston Networks worked with Brookfield Multiplex and Mercury Engineering, from the outset to design and deploy a resilient, flexible and highly scalable Intelligent Building solution, encompassing:

•    Structured Cabling
•    CCTV
•    Access Control, Intruder Alarm & Video Door Entry
•    Disabled Refuge & Disabled WC
•    Mortuary Audio Communication

Key Features
The communication infrastructure encompasses:

•    Category 6A 10GPlus Structured Cabling
•    Fibre Optic  & copper cabling
•    26 communication cabinets, installed across campus within 11 communications rooms

The IP security solution encompasses over 60 Pelco cameras, ensuring that the building benefits from mission-critical HD surveillance with unwavering reliability. Additionally the highly secure Access Control and Door Entry system provides enhanced operational flexibility and centralised management and is currently fully operational for over 400 unique users.
Through the integration of critical systems, including CCTV and Access Control the solution is:

•    Scalable enough to accommodate thousands of HD and megapixel cameras
•    Has multiple levels of redundancy to ensure maximum system uptime
•    Provides around-the-clock monitoring and cost-effective recording
•    Delivers unsurpassed  integration capabilities

Boston Networks also deployed an audio communications system to guarantee secure and constant communication between areas within the lab building including the Mortuary, Police rooms and Paediatrics department.

Benefits
The experience of the design, project delivery and engineering teams at Boston Networks ensured that this prolific project was delivered within the tightest of schedules.  Additionally by working collaboratively with our partners we were able to:

•    Simplify planning, resource allocation and project management
•    Greatly reduced commissioning times, containment and power supplies, with the adoption of a single  solution and use of IP   technology

The Lab building now benefits from seamless flows of communication and staff can use a myriad of devices to access the intelligent network for critical patient records and information, facilitating truly world class research and patient services.

Moreover by delivering a fully integrated and state of the art IP security solution, the Labs building will benefit from a scalable and bespoke solution with simplified and centralised management.

Boston Networks is now working on the structured cabling and wireless infrastructure and security solution for phase 2 of New South Glasgow Hospitals and it’s seamlessly integration into to the new ‘super hospital’s’ intelligent network when it opens in 2015.
