Whitelee is already Europe’s largest onshore wind farm and will receive a boost of more than 200MW with the additional 75 turbines that are currently being installed.
The wind farm currently covers 55sq km of Eaglesham Moor, near Glasgow, and has 140 turbines which can generate 322MW of electricity; enough to power 180,000 homes. The 75 turbine extension will increase the generating capacity of the wind farm to 539MW, enough to power the equivalent of up to 300,000 households.
Boston Networks worked with its partner, BBESL, to provide a specialist fibre optic commissioning service to prepare, terminate and test pre installed single mode fibre optic cabling at each of the 75 new turbines, local WTB Kiosk, Control Centre and Sub-Stations. Working in extreme terrain the Boston Networks engineers delivered the project on time, within budget and within the exacting tolerance specific to the bespoke and challenging project.
This extra generating capacity will be fully operational and connected to the National Grid in 2012.
