Delivering high speed connectivity to 121 schools across Dumfries and Galloway
Boston Networks recently designed, commissioned and installed a state of the art WLAN solution throughout Dumfries and Galloway. The high speed solution was designed to deliver a single, cohesive network to offer Wi-Fi coverage to each of the 121 Primary and Secondary Schools in the Dumfries & Galloway Council region.
To deliver the required coverage and bandwidth, Boston Networks completed a full WLAN Radio Frequency (RF) survey across the entire school estate. The detailed network planning phase identified the best locations for over 1200 access points, which would ensure flawless connectivity to all 105 primary schools and 16 high schools. The meticulous planning also ensured that the network has the capacity to scale to meet future expansion.
The network was rolled out across the entire Dumfries and Galloway region, providing a dedicated education network; delivering full mobility across all schools. Boston Networks also completed a full, post installation, RF coverage survey to ensure there were no unforeseen problematic areas or signal drop off points.
The network is now fully operational, is used by both teachers and students alike and is the primary vehicle to support teaching staff when delivering digital content, real time in the classroom. The teaching faculty use the network widely to share knowledge, pool resources and collaborate, where as students can now benefit from a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach to learning.
BYOD has recently become the ‘next best’ breed of technological advance in Education, with recent evidence suggesting that such an approach to teaching increases student achievement and engagement. Dumfries and Galloway has become an early adopter of the BYOD approach to teaching as the new network allows students to bring their own devices to school to use in the classroom and to securely access the internet during free time for both social and academic use.
