Boston Networks awarded £6m Framework to deliver Public Wi-Fi for Renfrewshire Council & Partners

£6m Framework Award for Renfrewshire Wi-Fi

L to R – Scott McEwan, Boston Networks, Claudette Jones, UWS, Heather Armstrong, SAUWS, Councillor Mark Macmillan, Renfrewshire Council

Boston Networks has been awarded a £6 million-pound Framework Agreement to deliver Public Wi-Fi connectivity for Renfrewshire Council and other leading public sector organisations in the Renfrewshire area.  The award will pave the way for free Public Wi-Fi in Paisley, Johnstone and Renfrew town centres, as well as other public buildings, and the temporary provision of Wi-Fi to support major outdoor and indoor events.

Renfrewshire Council awarded the Framework Agreement to Boston Networks for the supply and delivery of the Public Access Wi-Fi platform and all associated services to meet the Council and Renfrewshire based Framework Partners current and future connectivity requirements.  The Council has committed £1 million in the programme with the remaining £5 million for partner investment.

The framework contract will allow Renfrewshire Council partners, including Renfrewshire Leisure, The University of West of Scotland, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and West College Scotland, to utilise Boston Networks extensive Wi-Fi service to extend coverage to both their indoor and outdoor locations throughout the area.

Working closely with Renfrewshire Council, Boston Networks will design and deliver a leading-edge, secure and fully managed wireless solution.  The ubiquitous, high performing and scalable Public Wi-Fi service will be capable of extending into additional areas, as required, to deliver a seamless user experience both in-building and outdoor in town centres.

Regeneration & Digital Inclusion
Renfrewshire Council is commissioning the system to address a number of key strategic priorities including tackling poverty, improving digital inclusion and participation, regenerating town centres, stimulating employment and economic growth, and to cement Paisley’s position as a home of education.

Lack of affordable digital connectivity, as was highlighted in Renfrewshire Council’s Digital Participation Plan, is a key barrier for those disadvantaged by low income or disability.  The Public Wi-Fi service will offer free internet access to anyone in Johnstone, Paisley and Renfrew town centres and will help to tackle digital exclusion.

User Experience
Working with technology partner, WiFi SPARK, Boston Networks will provide local residents, students and visitors with access to the Public Wi-Fi service through a bespoke self-registration user experience portal.  The platform will allow users to quickly and easily access the internet and will allow Renfrewshire Council and the Framework Partners the opportunity to promote and advertise relevant local information to a wide range of users.

Furthermore, the Public Wi-Fi platform will generate real time user data to assist the Council and Framework Partners with messaging, marketing and analytics.  The information can then be used to understand trends, statistics and usage patterns to support the ongoing improvement and development of the service.

Support & Maintenance
As well as the design and deployment of the Public Wi-Fi service, Boston Networks will monitor all system elements to provide effective end user support, ensure 24/7 connectivity, deliver exceptional quality of service, and super-fast incident resolution.

Scott McEwan, Chief Executive, Boston Networks commented:

“We are delighted to be working with Renfrewshire Council to support their digital transformation strategy through the delivery of an enterprise grade Public Wi-Fi service”.

“Our experienced team will fully utilise their expert technical knowledge to design and deliver a leading-edge Public Wi-Fi solution to support the council’s key strategic priorities, such as improving digital inclusion and participation throughout the Renfrewshire area”.

“Renfrewshire Council is setting the standard high.  Their model will serve as an excellent example to other councils, who like Renfrewshire, will adopt digital technologies to deliver economic growth and transformation through the provision of digital public services”.

“The award is another significant milestone in our strategy to deliver reliable, enterprise grade, high speed Wi-Fi to people, buildings, towns and cities throughout Scotland and the UK.”
