Bolton Community & Sixth Form Colleges
Multi campus intelligent building infrastructure and bespoke network video surveillance solution
Bolton Community College is one of the North West’s largest providers of vocational training and further education. Highly skilled tutors and support staff are dedicated to offering advice and guidance on a wide range of courses with career paths and future progression firmly in mind.
The College designs and delivers hundreds of courses including, work-based learning, new diplomas and apprenticeships. It also provides a rapidly expanding, flexible and cost-effective training service to businesses looking to gain a valuable commercial advantage by up-skilling their workforce.
The college is going from strength to strength with more students than ever experiencing life-changing successes while taking first steps towards university, embarking on exciting new careers and polishing up professional skills.
To meet the growing needs of students and to reflect the success and rapid growth of Bolton Community College, a new 20,201 square metre site has been custom built. The new site features a wealth of hi-tech facilities including a large sports hall and gymnasium, hair & beauty salon, performing arts studio, a new training restaurant complete with catering facilities and a purpose built construction centre. In addition, the new Sixth Form College consistently ranked amongst the highest performing colleges in the country, will see the creation of a high quality learning environment focused on the needs of 16-19 year old students.
Although the Colleges will retain their separate identities, independence and distinctiveness of mission, Bolton required a unified, state of the art IT and CCTV infrastructure to offer connectivity across all campuses. Ensuring seamless flows of communication and collaboration between the separate bodies and providing the highest levels of security for students and staff alike were just a few of key deliverables for the project.
In a scheme seen to be one of the largest planned investments in further education in the North West of England, Boston Networks Ltd worked with Bolton Community College and Bolton Sixth Form College to plan, design and implement a leading edge infrastructure throughout its 3 new state of the art buildings.
The bespoke, intelligent network includes:
- Brand-Rex Category 6A 10G structured cabling to 5,500 information outlets
- 5000 metres of fibre optic cabling linking 20 wiring closets
- 220 IP CCTV cameras covering ‘hot spots’, public areas & the external perimeter
- Milestone software managing the IP network based video surveillance
The scalable cabling infrastructure installed by Boston Networks Ltd has provided the college’s staff and students with a reliable and secure network that connects the multiple campuses which runs at peak performance 24/7.
With the integration of IP CCTV to Bolton’s infrastructure, Boston Networks Ltd deployed 220 high definition cameras. Managed by sophisticated Milestone software the cameras cover ‘hot spots’ & public areas across all of Bolton’s campuses delivering unrivalled video quality and functionality. In addition, the CCTV solution has been recognised by Bolton’s management team as contributing to its strategy on combating anti-social behaviour.
In the summer of 2010, we at Bolton College moved into a new state of the art building. Twelve months prior to the move, we started looking into many technologies to ensure that we would make the absolute best of this opportunity.
Since then, Boston has worked with us and introduced us to ‘best of breed’ technologies in CCTV and Cabling Infrastructure. In both instances, we were presented a number of different options and clearly given the advantages and disadvantages for each. Working closely with Boston, the College felt comfortable in choosing which solutions were best suited to us.
One important factor was the vision that Boston shared with us in determining not only the best products for us now, but what would be best for years to come.
