14,000 data outlets and blown fibre for new School for Informatics
Founded in 1583 The University of Edinburgh is one of the UK’s leading educational establishments. Internationally renowned for both teaching and research, the university is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in Europe, having consistently being placed among leading universities in the world.
Employing over 7,000 staff the university is made up of 26 faculties which collectively educate over 28,000 students.
The University’s ‘School of Informatics’ is recognised as one of the most prominent departments in the country. Recently confirmed as the largest Informatics research grouping in the UK, the faculty offers students access to many of the leading academic experts currently working in this subject area.
The School of Informatics were looking to deploy a cabling network solution throughout several buildings across the university’s campus. The scope of this project demanded a dynamic and robust cabling solution to meet very precise, detailed requirements.
With extensive experience in many types of installations across a wide variety of environments, Boston Networks was selected for being a recognised innovator and market-leader in the structured cabling arena and a company able to meet the challenging deliverables of the flagship project.
The design phase encompassed a thorough planning process by Boston Networks’ in-house BICSI design team. In particular, the blown fibre solution connecting The School of Informatics and The Old College building proved complex due to the fact that Boston Networks had to provide connectivity across one of the busiest streets in Edinburgh.
Boston Networks installed a leading edge cabling infrastructure throughout several buildings, providing connectivity between 26 communication rooms across campus.
The standards based communications network encompasses a site wide containment system, distributing a Category 6 cabling infrastructure to 14,000 RJ45 information outlets, for:
- Intelligent Building Systems
Due to a long standing and trusted relationship with The University of Edinburgh and a reputation of being one of the UK’s leading installers of structured cabling systems, Boston Networks were able to entirely scope, design and install the leading-edge solution on behalf of the university.
The copper cabling is supported by a ‘Laser Optimized’ blown fibre optic cabling system which provides seamless connectivity straight to the desk, between the 70 plus communications closets throughout and directly to the UK Education & Research Network, ‘JANET’.
'Boston Networks have been one of our nominated contractors for over five years now and Edinburgh University have been very pleased with the quality of the service received throughout this period. Boston Networks are extremely knowledgeable in regards to all aspects of wireless networking as well as structured cabling systems. The School Of Informatics had complete confidence in Boston Networks to deliver an installation seamlessly and on such a large scale. We look forward to continuing a good working relationship with Boston Networks on future installations’.
