West Dunbartonshire Council
High speed wireless transmission in non line of sight, busy environment
West Dunbartonshire Council is located in west-central Scotland to the northwest of Glasgow. It extends north to the shores of Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest loch and encompasses an area of lowlands surrounding the Kilpatrick Hills.
West Dunbartonshire lies entirely within the historic county of Dunbartonshire and contains many of Glasgow’s commuter towns and villages as well as the city’s suburbs.
West Dunbartonshire Council had an existing licensed radio solution in place for their varying communication requirements. However, due to the age of the equipment and the tree density across the link path it became more and more unreliable. Furthermore, the existing solution was low capacity and could only provide the council with 23 Mbps bandwidth.
Installing a traditional leased line proved too costly and challenging, in terms of lead time, therefore Boston Networks advised the council to deploy a reliable and cost-effective unlicensed wireless solution solution using Alvarion technology.
One of the main aims of the new link was to deliver high-bandwidth connectivity between two, non-line-of-sight, key locations within the council area.
Boston Networks Ltd conducted a rigorous planning and design process on behalf of the Council which included advanced radio planning and path profiling. Testing several solutions, Boston Networks Ltd selected an Alvarion’s BreezeNET B300 solution which:
- Provides 240 Mbps of bandwidth
- Features non-line-of-sight capabilities
- Delivers unrivalled connectivity and bandwidth over a 1.7 km path
Boston Networks took in to consideration West Dunbartonshire Council’s geographical barriers and delivered an end-to-end wireless solution deployed within budget and on time.
The Council now enjoys enhanced, high-capacity voice, data & video connectivity between their 2 key locations. Another important benefit is that the BreezeNET B300 link operates in a non-line-of-sight environment where other solutions failed to deliver.
The wireless solution has opened up the existing bottleneck and now enables the council to provide multiple and improved services to the residents of West Dunbartonshire.
